Open innovation project with a vision for safer polyurethane systems

Polyurethanes are versatile plastic materials that you can find in many applications - foam mattresses, animal-free synthetic leather, coatings and adhesives, as just a few examples. Today, they are made at large scale using isocyanates which often present toxicity risks for human health and environment.

As part of its open innovation program, Perstorp is part of a consortium, NIPU-EJD, of leading European scientists in universities and the industrial sector that has a vision for safer and greener polyurethane systems. By using green and non-toxic monomers, we work together in creating high-performance alternatives for foams, coatings, and more. This project is one of many examples of Perstorp’s work with open innovation and the transition to a green and sustainable chemical industry.

“From an industrial perspective, non-isocyanate polyurethanes is an early, but evolving technology that has many interesting features. In the consortium, there is a lot of very interesting research that could provide a good opportunity for making these materials both greener and more sustainable for specialty applications. I am really excited to see the development in this area.” says Magnus Johnson, Director Open Innovation & IP.

“I am very happy as Perstorp to be part of the NIPU-EJD consortium. The industry is really looking forward to the development of non-isocyanate polyurethane systems both from safety and sustainable aspects. It is great to see the progress made since the project start and to be part of a very enthusiast and skilled network” , says Vanessa Maurin, Resins & Coatings Application Development Manager.
