World’s largest caprolactone supplier continues to grow

The market for caprolactone-based technology is continuing to grow rapidly and Perstorp’s investment is a direct response to the significant market demand.

This investment is key to securing the future of the caprolactones industry and ensuring reliable supply for formulators who are already using or interested in exploring caprolactones technology in their applications.

“We have a strong belief in the future of the Capa™ product range and are committed to supporting and developing the caprolactone market,” Vice President of Caprolactones Mårten Olausson comments.

In polyurethane applications where performance is the key differentiating factor, Perstorp´s Capa™ caprolactones present an attractive alternative for improving properties and end-product quality in many coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers applications. Capa™ polycaprolactones allow formulators to tailor even more precise properties in their end products. Formulations based on Capa™ polycaprolactones possess low viscosity, resulting in improved processability and lower VOC levels. They are especially used in applications such as injection grade TPUs, PUD synthesis, cast elastomers, reactive hot-melt adhesives and light-stable flexible coatings for leather and many other substrates.

“We are investing heavily in our Capa™ caprolactones and predict a bright future for these products. They complement our portfolio of special polyols perfectly and give our customers an edge in spearheading the development of new products and applications,” Olausson adds.

The capacity for their downstream products Capa™ Poyols and Capa™ Thermoplastics was expanded during 2010 to meet the expected increase in demand that follows with the new monomer capacity.

Commissioning of the new Capa™ Monomer unit has recently started and Perstorp anticipate seeing the first product out of the new plant in July 2011. The new unit is built on the same process technology as our existing unit and we expect that the quality of the product from the new unit in every aspect will match that of product manufactured in the existing unit.

A period of extensive internal qualification will follow as soon as the plant is operational and thereafter Perstorp will be able to offer volumes from the new plant. “We expect to be in a position to take on regular deliveries of new commercial volumes latest by 1 September 2011,” Olausson concludes.
