The bio-butanol project

Perstorp and Protista from the south of Sweden studied during 2008-2011 the possibilities of producing bio-butanol by fermentation. Here a modern way to apply the classical ABE anaerobic fermentationroute has been developed. In the project "Skogskemi", sponsored by Vinnova and with 16 partners, three value chains “from forest to chemicals” are studied. Perstorp leads one of these, where a thermocemical route from forest residues will be converted into bio-butanol.

Bio-butanol would work like ethanol, which is used in petrol today. The benefits compared with ethanol are mainly its content of more potential energy per volume unit and is kinder to engines. Bacterial fermentation is used as the technical solution and various bacteria have been used to ferment sugar, starch etc. to produce bio-butanol.

Beside being a base chemical commodity, butanol is also a potential candidate as a drop-in fuel replacer, both for gasoline and diesel applications. Perstorp actively studies several ways to produce butanol from renewable raw materials; e.g.
