Gut Health Challenges for Swine
The life of a pig is full of challenges. Even before birth resources can be scarce. After that, things don’t get any easier. At weaning and even at the finishing stage, pathogens make life hard for a pig. The overarching challenge for swine producers is how to navigate this plethora of challenges while also keeping the amount of antibiotics used to a minimum.

Antibiotic reduction for swine
Antibiotics are undoubtedly one of mankind’s most valuable discovery. They help us - and farm animals - to fight diseases caused by bacterial pathogens. They also improve the growth performance of animals. We depend on them so much that antibiotic resistance is one of this century’s biggest concerns for our species.

Pathogenic pressure - Swine
Pathogens are a thorn in the side for anyone in animal production. They can reduce the animal’s performance and put food safety at risk. A pathogenic strike in finisher herds can be very unfortunate and extremely costly for the producer since some of the pathogens are known to cause sudden deaths among the animals just before slaughter. Trying to keep the use of antibiotics limited while under pathogenic pressure can make things even more challenging.

Before we look forward into the future of aquaculture, let’s take a look back! How did aquaculture start?

The love/hate relationship between aquaculture and antibiotics
The threat of antibiotic resistance in aquaculture is becoming more evident every year. Aquaculture – like other animal protein production systems – needs to be wary of antibiotic resistance. However a different set of challenges appear because of the way the feeding takes place and how production systems are set up.

Weaning Winners Program
The Weaning Winners program from Perstorp addresses key nutritional risks. This strategy provides the piglet with an exogenous and endogenous defense shield that will act like multiple lines of defense to ultimately reduce the risk of PWD.

What happens now?
Preventing PWD should ideally be holistic, combining optimal nutrition with best biosecurity, management, and health practices. There is no single substitute for ZnO, so each plan should be tailored to the needs of the individual farm.
