Our products are mainly sold to companies in paint, chemicals and plastic-based industries. They also include products for the engineering and construction industries, such as polyols, performance chemicals and resins.
Throughout the company's 121-year history, Perstorp has known that continuous renewal is one of the most important challenges to stay successful in a fast-changing world.
• Acetic acid today.
Today, acetic acid is only a small fraction of the company's total sales - as the matter of fact only 0,1 percent. Acetic acid is mainly used in Scandinavia and we sell approx, 2 million bottles a year, and still retain 50 percent of Swedish market.
Still, if you ask an older person in Sweden what Perstorp is known for, the answer would simply be - acetic acid.
• Early Core Technology.
Perstorp was founded in today's village of Perstorp because of it's natural resources - Beech wood. Even if it was a natural resource our founder was actually competing for the raw materials with his own father Carl Wendt. He was the biggest owner of forest and was selling the beech wood to customers outside the family.
As the raw material was becoming a scarce resource Wilhelm Wendt realized that he would have to diversify his business and began to maximize the refinement and utilization of the raw materials yielded by the charcoal burning process in order to keep his business on its feet financially. The raw material situation changed in 1895 when his father died and Wilhelm became the sole heir with full responsibility for the forests around Perstorp. His ambition to continuously refine and make use of all byproducts was still a prime driver for developments.
This is the reason why the manufacturing of acetic acid, creosote etc became a business over time. The money from creosote production was used in 1905 to build a factory that could convert methanol to formalin. Thus, a further step was taken in the refinement of raw material yielded by the company's carbonization process.
The first years formalin was sold mainly as disinfectant. Later formalin formed the base for great many products within Perstorp.
• Polyols - 40 years of experience.
In the 1940's funds began to flow into the Company from its financially successful charcoal burning plant.
Otto Wendt invested the money in a study at the University of Lund in southern Sweden, into the development of polyalcohols or polyols, specialty chemicals mainly used for the production of resins.
• Modern History.
Perstorp grows in new areas.
Perstorp's modern history began in 1970 when the company was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange (in 1983, Perstorp was also listed on the London Stock Exchange). Perstorp needed to add both external expertise and external capital to the company. This new move became the starting point of strong renewal and internationalization for the whole company.
During the seventies and the eighties, Perstorp aquired a large number of companies, both in the US and in Europe. The new companies were active in areas that were wellknown to Perstorp, such as chemistry and laminates. But new to the Perstorp Group were also companies specializing, among other things, in biochemistry and plastic products for materials handling.
One of Perstorp's most important products ever, Pergo, was launched in 1984. Pergo, the laminate floor, is built upon Perstorp's long know-how in the areas of laminate and chemistry and was something completely new, when it was introduced to the market. Today Pergo is a well-known brand name in the flooring market world-wide.
