Main uses
Our customers use our Purified Isophthalic Acid as an alternative or complement to phthalic anhydride and terephthalic acid. With its 1.3 carboxylic acid configuration, isophthalic acid helps break crystallinity in PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle and fibre grade, which in turn improves clarity and processing. For unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) and gel coats, our Purified Isophthalic Acid, combined with our Neopentyl Glycol (Neo), secures the production of UPRs with superior water resistance and weatherability. These polyesters are generically termed iso-polyesters and they are the mark of quality that boat builders look for in UPRs and gel coats. For liquid and powder coating polyesters, isophthalic acid is essential in providing industrial coatings with the proper balance between appearance and processing on the one hand and mechanical properties and chemical resistance on the other.
