Food & Feed building for the future

With a distinctive four-leaf clover, ProsidTM, Perstorp's latest brand, is intent on conquering the market for feed acids.

"We want to sell function rather than products," says agronomist Birgitta Berndtsson, who is responsible for the development of the Food & Feed department's new product portfolio consisting of feed acidifiers. "The producers of feed to whom we sell our products focus solely on function. For example, they might want a product that extends shelf life and functions well in the stomach of a pig, not just a product that contains calcium formate."

New product portfolio is born
The first product being launched is Prosid CF30, which is based on calcium formate, an ingredient that Perstorp has sold for feed applications since the beginning of the year when the company took over sales of the calcium-formate feed produced at the plant in Bruchhausen. This change was in line with the decision to focus on feed acidifiers and is a natural step in Perstorp's efforts to create its own brand platform. The Prosid product portfolio was born.

"Food & Feed now has two strong 'product legs' to stand on, namely silage agents and feed acidifiers," says Peter Skarp, product manager. "The new product group and the new brand mean that we are building for the future - we're not just including existing products but also creating new ones. We also know that our products are renowned for their good quality and that there is plenty of demand for them."

Raw materials from Perstorp but different function
The portfolio currently consists of two products - Prosid CF30 and Prosid SP77 - both of which are salts deriving from organic acids. While both of the products are based on organic acids, their functions differ.
"Prosid CF30 is a feed additive with an antibacterial effect that is used mainly in pig feed. The product has several more positive effects, however. By adding CF30 to the feed, the pH level is kept down, which helps to maintain a favorable environment in the pig’s stomach," Birgitta explains. "This is particularly important when it comes to weaning, a stressful time when the piglets become more receptive to infections. The product is also a good source of calcium."

Prosid for feed hygiene
"The business concept for Prosid is that we will offer the feed industry products that help them maintain good hygiene for their feed. "The alternative to the Prosid products would be to use pure acids. Some feed producers prefer to use concentrated, liquid acids, while others choose the less corrosive and easier-to-handle salts. In other words, we at Perstorp can satisfy both needs."

Natural, organic healthy and completely safe
"The Prosid products exist naturally in both animals and humans, although obviously in less concentrated amounts," Birgitta explains. “There are no signs that bacteria become resistant to feed acids and no residual substances from the products have been detected.”

"The rate of activity is intense, we cooperate with leading universities and research institutions in Europe and that also applies to the development of new products," says Peter. "We're investing in the future and hope to be able to expand the Prosid portfolio."
