Dust explosion at Perstorp’s German plant
A dust explosion occurred on the morning of 12 September at Perstorp’s plant in Bruchhausen, Germany. A large fire broke out in a silo next to the plant which produces Pentaerithritol polyol (Penta).
The reason for the accident is still unclear but the explosion occurred when a silo hatch was opened and dust from the product was sucked out. Three workers were injured during the accident, one of them seriously. The injured were taken to hospital, of which two were sent to specialist burns clinics.
The local fire brigade were quickly on the scene and worked with a special response team of around 150 people to extinguish the fire. The fire was quickly brought under control and there was never any risk to people living in the area or to the environment.
The extent of the material damage is as yet unknown but is expected to cost millions of kronor. The accident occurred during the current annual maintenance stoppage and it is still yet not known when the plant will be able to start production again.
An internal inquiry into the cause of the accident has started. The relevant authorities and local police are now working to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Around 130 people work at Perstorp’s plant in Bruchhausen. The plant produces pentaerithritol and calcium formate. Pentaerthritol is used mainly for paints and varnishes, calcium formate is used in feed additives.
